A TIFF straight off a scanner or a camera can run to 50 or 100 MB for a single page. That is not a fault in the file. TIFF was built for print and archiving, so it stores every pixel exactly as captured and throws nothing away. The size is the whole point of the format. It only becomes a problem when you need to email the file, attach it to a form, or upload it somewhere with a size limit.
This is lossless compression. Not “almost lossless”, not “no visible difference at normal viewing size”. The image data that comes out is identical to the image data that went in, and the file is smaller because it is packed more efficiently rather than because detail was removed. Open the result next to the original at 400 percent and there is nothing to find.
That distinction matters more here than it would for a holiday photo. Most free tools advertising TIFF compression quietly re-encode your image as a JPEG and leave it inside the TIFF wrapper, which looks fine on a screenshot and falls apart on a scanned page: fuzzy halos appear around the letters, thin lines break up, and an archive copy stops being a faithful copy. If you are compressing a scan for a records system, a court filing or a print shop, that is the difference between a file you can hand over and one you cannot.
Most image formats decide compression for you. A JPEG is always compressed. A PNG is always compressed. You cannot switch either one off. TIFF works differently: it is a container, and whatever program wrote the file chose what happens inside it. Photoshop may have saved yours with ZIP compression. A scanner may have used LZW. A microscope, a medical scanner or an older fax device may have used none at all, and that is where the 100 MB files come from. Two TIFFs of the same photograph can differ in size by a factor of five because of that one setting, with no visible difference between them.
Converting a TIFF to JPEG makes it smaller, but you get a JPEG back. That is fine for a photo you are posting online and wrong for a scan you need to keep, print or submit. This tool leaves the file a TIFF. Your archive stays an archive, your print shop still gets what it asked for, and the file still opens in the same software it opened in before.
You will see both spellings, and people search for both. They are the same format. The three letter version is left over from MS-DOS, which could not handle a fourth character in a file extension, and Windows kept it around long after the limitation was gone. Rename a .tif to .tiff and nothing breaks. Both work here.
Scanners are the single most common reason people end up looking for this page. A department scans a stack of paper at 600 DPI, the files land at 40 MB each, and the document system rejects them. Scanned text is also the easiest kind of image to compress, because a page of black type on white paper contains far less real information than a photograph does. If your TIFF is a scanned page rather than a picture, expect a bigger reduction than you would get from a photo.
One TIFF can also hold many pages at once, which is how most document scanners save a stack of paper. Those stay together here. Every page is read and written back into one compressed TIFF, in the same order, rather than being split into a file per page.
There are no quality sliders, no compression menus and no advanced tab. One level is applied to every file, chosen to be the point where scans and photographs both come out noticeably smaller without the result looking wrong. Upload, wait, download. If you need fine control over compression type and depth, that is a job for desktop software, and this tool is not pretending otherwise.
Compression is the right answer when the file has to stay a TIFF. When it does not, changing the format usually saves more. This is roughly how the choice breaks down.
