Here is what happens inside most JPG to PDF converters: your photo is opened, decoded, and saved again as a new JPEG before it is placed in the document. That second save is a second round of compression, and JPEG loses a little every time. On its own you might not notice. On a photo that was already compressed by your phone, and then again by the app you edited it in, it is one generation too many — and it shows first in skies, skin and gradients.
