Compress an AVIF that is already compressed

AVIF is the most efficient image format in common use, which puts anyone landing on this page in an unusual position. Your file is already the small version. Whatever exported it has already thrown away what it thought you would not miss, and you are here because it still is not small enough. That changes what this tool can honestly offer you, and it is worth saying plainly before you upload anything.

This one is lossy, and pretending otherwise would be a lie

Some compression takes nothing away. Zipping a file, cleaning junk out of an SVG, repacking a TIFF: the data survives intact. AVIF does not work that way. To make an AVIF smaller you have to decode it and encode it again at a lower quality, and every pass through that cycle costs detail you cannot get back. Any tool telling you it compresses AVIF with no quality loss is either not compressing it or not telling you the truth.

What you get here instead is the honest version. On a test file, a 13.6 KB image came back at 8.7 KB, which is 36 percent smaller and measurably degraded: fine gradients flatten slightly and sharp edges soften. On a photograph the difference is hard to see at normal size. On a screenshot with text or a flat graphic with hard edges it can be obvious.

Go back to the source when you can

One re-encode is a compromise. Two is a mess. If you still have whatever the AVIF came from, a RAW file, a PSD, a high quality JPEG, exporting a fresh AVIF from that will always beat squeezing the AVIF you already have. Each generation of re-encoding builds on the artefacts of the last one, and the result gets muddy faster than the file gets small. Use this tool when the original is gone or out of reach, which is most of the time, and go back to the source when it is not.

Why your AVIF might be big in the first place

An oversized AVIF is usually an export problem rather than a format problem. Design tools often default to a quality setting far higher than anything a screen needs, and some export at the full pixel dimensions of the artboard regardless of where the image will actually appear. A 4000 pixel wide image displayed in a 800 pixel column is carrying five times the data it needs, and no amount of compression fixes that as cleanly as resizing would. If your file is unusually large for what it shows, check its dimensions before you compress it.

Nothing to configure

There are no quality sliders here. One setting is applied to every file, chosen to take a useful amount off without pushing into obvious damage. If you need precise control over the quality target, that is a job for a desktop encoder where you can compare settings side by side. This is for when you want a smaller file quickly and can live with the standard trade.

Animated AVIF

AVIF can hold an animation, in the same way a GIF does. That is a different kind of file and it is not what this tool is built for, so if you upload an animated AVIF, check what comes back before you use it anywhere. For a still photograph or graphic, which is what almost every AVIF is, there is nothing to worry about.

What happens to your files

Files travel over an encrypted connection, get compressed, and are deleted from the server an hour later. Your original on your own machine is never touched, so if the result is not good enough you still have what you started with. That last part matters more here than on most tools, because this is the one operation on this site you cannot undo.
