Convert JPG to PNG online, free

Converting a JPG to PNG does not undo anything the JPG already did. The compression artifacts baked into those pixels stay exactly where they are — no format change can bring back detail that was discarded when the JPG was written. What changes is everything that happens next. PNG is lossless, so from this point on every crop, edit, and re-save stops shedding quality, and PNG carries a real alpha channel if you or a downstream tool needs to cut out a background that a JPG structurally cannot hold.

Why people are told to send a PNG

Most of the time the request comes from somewhere else: a print shop that wants a lossless master, a design tool that refuses JPEG imports, a platform that only accepts PNG for logos, or a workflow where the file will be edited and re-saved several more times. All of those are good reasons. Expecting a sharper image is not one, and any converter that implies otherwise is selling you something.

The size problem, and the palette option

A full-colour PNG of a photograph is enormous — often larger than the JPG you started with, because PNG stores every pixel exactly instead of approximating them. If that matters, switch on palette mode. It rebuilds the image from a limited colour palette and can cut the file by up to 76%. It is slightly lossy, which is why it stays off unless you ask for it. You can set the palette size yourself anywhere from 2 to 256 colours, or leave it empty and let your chosen level pick 256, 128, or 64.

Which level to choose

Fast, Recommended, and Smallest control how hard the encoder works on the PNG. Recommended is the default and is the right answer for almost everything. Fast is worth it when you are converting a large batch and want it back quickly. Smallest spends more time squeezing the file down and is worth the wait when the PNG is going somewhere size-sensitive.

Colours that stay the way you shot them

The colour profile embedded in your JPG is kept by default rather than stripped, so a photo shot in a wide colour space does not come back looking flat or oversaturated. If the PNG is headed for the web, switch to Convert to sRGB instead and the colours will render correctly in every browser rather than depending on what each one guesses.

Converting a lot of files

Upload up to 100 JPGs at once from your device, Google Drive, or a direct URL, and get them back together. Your original filenames are kept, so a batch stays organised instead of arriving as a pile of numbered files. Everything is deleted from the servers within an hour, and you can remove any file yourself straight away.

What you get

  • A genuinely lossless PNG that will not degrade through further editing
  • Optional palette mode that cuts file size by up to 76% when you want it
  • Palette size under your control, from 2 to 256 colours
  • Your original colour profile kept, or a clean conversion to sRGB
  • Up to 100 files per batch with original filenames preserved
  • No account, no watermark, and files deleted within an hour

What's next?

Need the opposite — a smaller file rather than a lossless one? Convert PNG to JPG goes the other way. If you want the PNG itself to be smaller without changing format, Compress PNG handles that. And if the file is destined for a website, Convert PNG to WebP keeps transparency intact while shrinking it further than PNG can.

常见问题

No, and nothing can. The artifacts already in the JPG's pixels stay exactly as they are. Converting moves them into a lossless container so nothing further is lost from here on. Getting the original quality back requires the original file, not a format change.

Usually yes, often much bigger, because PNG stores every pixel exactly instead of approximating them. That is the trade you are making for lossless. If the size is a problem, switch on palette mode — it can cut the file by up to 76%.

It rebuilds the image from a limited set of colours instead of the full range, which is how PNG actually gets small. It is off by default because it is slightly lossy, and a tool should not quietly alter your image without being asked. You can choose the palette size from 2 to 256 colours, or leave it blank and let the level decide.

No. A JPG has no transparency to begin with, so the PNG comes out fully opaque. What you gain is a format capable of holding transparency for whatever you do next, not transparency that was not there before.

No. The colour profile embedded in your JPG is kept by default, so the PNG looks the same wherever it is opened. Choose Convert to sRGB instead if the file is going on the web and you want it to render identically in every browser.

That is the reverse tool, Convert PNG to JPG. Same engine and the same three levels, built for shrinking a PNG down rather than converting up to a lossless format.
